"Mr President, I think that the legal system in Russia has deteriorated considerably and the cases we are talking about here – and not just the case of the three women in the pop group – mirror the actual state of that legal system.
We all know that it will be very hard to change. Nevertheless, we must make it quite clear that what is happening in Russia in the legal field is a disgrace. It is also a personal disgrace for Vladimir Putin. The three women who were sentenced to two years had already spent almost nine months in custody. Let us bear this fact in mind! Nine months in custody for an act that it is very difficult to classify as a criminal act.
If I take this into account and think back to the old days of communism in Czechoslovakia, I do not remember the legal system being so politically abused in communist Czechoslovakia in the eighties. We must develop relations with Russia, but it should be made clear to Putin that this disgrace will remain with him as a person and as a statesman."@en1
