"Mr President, Baroness Ashton, we talk about Syria, but it is all findings and wishes. That is all we can do. We find that a civil war is under way in which thousands of people are being sacrificed every day. We stand by their families and hope that this war will, at some point, come to an end. I cannot say that we are making superhuman efforts and I cannot ask you to assume responsibility for what we are and are not doing in Syria, when the UN has failed to find a solution to the problem, because the situation is complicated by the ties between that country and Russia and Iran. The point I want to make is that we must ‘beware of Danaans bearing gifts’. We must beware of Turkey, which is trying to address an issue that comes within the Davutoğlu doctrine. I ask you, firstly, what are the opposition forces in Syria and who controls them; secondly, is there a refugee admittance plan and, thirdly, what are we going to do about the Christians in Syria?"@en1
