"The updating of the legislation on the reduction of the sulphur content of marine gas oils, which was finally approved by MEPs this Tuesday in Strasbourg, will put a further brake on pollution from ships in all of the EU’s seas. In fact, we ratified by a large majority (606 votes to 55, with 13 abstentions) the provisional agreement reached by the Council on the proposal aiming to reduce emissions of sulphur particles from ships (Directive 93/12/EEC). According to this text, the maximum sulphur content of marine gas oils used in designated Sulphur Emission Control Areas (SECAs) (the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and the English Channel) will be reduced from 1.5% to 1% by 31 December 2014 and to 0.1% from 1 January 2015. The maximum content of 0.5% will be compulsory in all EU seas by 2020 and will also apply to all passenger ships operating outside the SECAs, and so on. State aid may be provided to avoid the negative impact on the sector’s competitiveness due to the investment costs inherent in these new requirements. I welcome this move."@en1
