"I decided to abstain from the vote on the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) for two reasons. Firstly, as proceedings are still pending before the Court of Justice of the European Union, I think that I should wait for them to be concluded before I make a final decision. This is not just common sense, it is also out of respect for the rule of law and for effective collaboration between institutions.
Secondly, while ACTA does not provide a perfect solution to counterfeiting, it is still a constructive proposal, which aims to protect innovation, jobs and our businesses. By defending intellectual property rights, ACTA is also protecting them. I should remind you that counterfeiting destroys 30 to 40 000 jobs each year in France and almost 100 000 in Europe. That is why, in the absence of any certainty as to the compatibility or incompatibility of the Agreement with Community law, and given the current crisis, I felt that I could not make an informed decision without full knowledge of the facts and I chose to abstain."@en1
