"Mr President, it is difficult to describe what we have seen in Russia as elections. Of course, technically speaking, there were different candidates on the ballots and voters could go to polling stations to vote.
Today we are receiving ever more reports of many irregularities during vote counting, but it is not just for this reason that it is difficult to speak of free elections. Firstly, all of the candidates that constituted a real threat for the authorities – and it must be stated clearly that those whose names were on the ballot did not constitute any such threat – were quite simply excluded from participation in the elections. For this reason I believe – and unfortunately I could not vote in favour of the European Parliament resolution, which has many true and critical statements about what took place in Russia – that this motion for a resolution did not, in my opinion, go far enough. We should speak out much more strongly in defence of democracy in Russia."@en1
