"Mr President, the reform proposed by the Commission will not resolve the dramatic situation faced by many European dairy farmers, for example in my homeland, Galicia, because production is still concentrated in large industrialised farms, which are causing an enormous social, environmental and regional disaster.
In some cases, previous agricultural reforms, particularly in the milk sector, have brought about a modernisation of the sector. With the current fall in milk prices, farmers cannot cope with this either. A compulsory interprofessional milk sector association will be needed in each Member State, bringing together professional farming organisations, the milk industry, cooperatives, distributors and consumers.
Public administrations must support these representative milk groups, which will obviously be much broader in scope than the idea of a simple contract between large companies."@en1
