"There is still a lot of confusion in the fruit juice market. When choosing juices, consumers are not entirely sure whether the juices are made from squeezed fruit or from concentrates. Another incorrectly interpreted term is the word ‘nectar’, the definition of which, as the rapporteur underlines, is not agreed even among manufacturers. Information about sugar content is absolutely necessary, particularly for persons with health problems. Uniformity of terminology and clear consumer information about products are the top priority. Another issue to be borne in mind is that increased consumption of locally produced juices should be encouraged. Over 80% of consumption in Europe consists of juices imported from across the Atlantic. Obviously, our citrus fruits are not as beautiful and ripe as Brazilian ones, but they are ideal for juice production. If we want to ensure food security in the EU and protect the environment by reducing CO emissions from transport, we should strongly support the European fruit juice market."@en1
