"Mr President, I believe that everyone present in this room agrees with the basic directive of the report. However, the magical number was pronounced by Mr Kelly: 82% of the orange juice used within the European Union is imported. And in order for us to be able to take steps in line with the directive and reach a healthy, normal ratio, we will, on the one hand, need to increase fruit production in Europe.
On the other hand, we need to increase the percentage of fruit juice produced from European fruits among fruit juices available for purchase in the European Union. It is extremely ambivalent to be discussing this while in Central and Eastern Europe, vast fruit plantations are being cut down by orders or instructions of the European Union. In Hungary, for instance, it is the European Union that forces farmers to cut down fruit plantations. Yet, if the European Union were to spend only a fragment of the amounts it spends on African countries on the replanting of fruit plantations and the revitalisation of the processing industry, there would by now be prosperity in all of Eastern Europe."@en1
