"Mr President, the quality, non-defectiveness and natural properties of food products are, from the point of view of our citizens, one of the most important areas for supervision by the bodies of the Union, an area which affects their daily lives. The fact that Council Directive 2001/112/EC is being amended for a second time means that, to ensure the necessary quality of fruit juices and similar products, it is necessary to respond to changes in production technology and the development of knowledge regarding the quality of this production. Producers frequently take advantage of loopholes in the rules and often offer consumers fruit drinks which do not contain the ingredients as declared on the label. More precise rules for the labelling of packages with regard to the actual composition of fruit drinks, as well as the fact that it will no longer be possible to add sugar to drinks labelled as fruit juice, will allow consumers to better distinguish the goods offered and to make a more informed choice from a wide range. We therefore expect broad support for the adoption of this directive."@en1
