"Mr President, I am delighted to say a few words on this interesting topic. One of the great delights of being a Member of the European Parliament is that you can buy freshly pressed orange juice from machines both in Brussels and in Strasbourg. The one question I have though is: why is the price in Strasbourg almost twice the price you pay in the Parliament in Brussels? However, having said that, I also feel that there is a market for similar machines to be made available to consumers right throughout the European Union, because there is confusion regarding fruit juices – those pressed from fresh fruit and those from concentrates. The second point which I want to make is that I was amazed in researching this to discover that 82% of the orange juice used within the European Union is imported, mainly from Brazil and the USA. I will agree with previous speakers that this has to be addressed in the reformed CAP so that we can avail of the opportunity to grow fresh fruit, particularly oranges for orange juice, within the European Union where there is a perfect climate for it. Certainly, that is an opportunity that we should not miss. It would improve fresh fruit and it would also lead to a reduction in the carbon footprint and CO emissions. Labelling is absolutely vital; we have to give the best information possible to consumers, particularly in relation to added sugar. An awful lot of consumers at this point in time do not make the distinction. I think there is not just a need for what we are doing here this evening; there is also a need for an educational process. People are hungry and thirsty to get this information and, if they have it, they will act on it. This is a good move and I welcome it."@en1
