"Mr President, on several occasions, the European Parliament has expressed the opinion that information plays a very important role in ensuring that the foodstuffs consumed by consumers are safe. Only by receiving full, non-deceptive information about products used will consumers be able to make a proper choice. This year, we have taken a step in this direction by approving the regulation on the provision of food information to consumers, and now we are going further by setting additional requirements for specific categories of foodstuffs. Drinks going by the name of fruit juices can often be found in the shops today. However, it is often unclear what fruit they are made of, how much sugar or sugar substitutes they contain, or whether they are juices at all or a drink produced from certain other substances. The document we are discussing today is another step towards clarity in terms of establishing what can be called fruit juices. It is very important for all juices that are marketed in the European Union to be subject to the same requirements. Exceptions should not therefore be made for juices imported into the European Union. The European Union is a big enough market for producers to be able to adapt to the requirements we have introduced.
When we vote tomorrow, we can adopt this directive at first reading. It is important to bear in mind how lengthy the procedure would otherwise be. Although I am somewhat disappointed that the text negotiated at the trialogue does not reflect all of the amendments adopted by the committee, I nevertheless feel that in this instance, the agreement of all parties is more important as I believe that this will contribute to legal certainty and the protection of consumers."@en1
