"Mr President, Baroness Ashton, among your achievements, you mentioned instruments to improve security planning and effectiveness in the Horn of Africa.
The European tuna fishing fleet operates in the Indian Ocean, with the Basque fleet forming a very significant part of it, particularly the fleet from Bermeo. These ships are being attacked and seized by pirates, and have been protected by Operation Atalanta since Parliament gave its approval for this in a resolution last year.
Now they are having problems as they are not allowed to have heavy weapons on board for enhanced protection, because the African authorities will not authorise this.
This is why I would like to ask you what the agreements you referred to have achieved to improve the security of European and Basque tuna fishing freezer vessels in the Indian Ocean."@en1
