"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, first of all I would like to congratulate Mr Sturdy on the drafting of his report; however, I cannot currently agree with him either from a political or from an economic standpoint. After all, non-tariff barriers are by themselves understandable, since we are in the middle of an economic crisis and countries seek to protect their own national economies. Why, it was open trade that has lead to the impoverishment of national economies in that they were unable to reduce unemployment in their own countries. This is why instead of continued efforts to create an open economy we need national sovereignty and food sovereignty. We need patriot economies that cooperate as strong economies in an economic alliance.
Furthermore, while we need to preserve the open market, we must focus on local economy and local markets when laying the new foundations on which the European economy can be rebuilt."@en1
