"Mr President, 2011 has ended, leaving behind a feeling of uncertainty about the future, the future of our citizens, the future of Europe and the future of the euro. Last year, the institutions of the European Union were replaced by an informal German-powered management team supported by the French. Political leaders and the media have presented the problems of Mediterranean Europe as the result of the laziness and corruption of its inhabitants. We call the Greeks lazy, but it turns out that they are the hardest-working Europeans. As a Greek, I refute these accusations, accusations that, unfortunately, by dint of constant vilification, have ripped the people apart.
We need to be careful, we need to remedy this and, more importantly, we need to send out a message: we respect Berlin, we respect Paris, but the European Union is alive and kicking."@en1
