"Mr President, President-in-Office of the Council, Commissioner, ladies and gentlemen, since their discovery, antibiotics have played a major role in the treatment of infectious diseases in human and veterinary medicine. However, the super weapon seems to be losing its effectiveness. I agree with the authors of the motion for a resolution that we need to be more prudent and more careful with antimicrobial agents. The aim must be to limit the use of antibiotics to the essential curing of infections. We also need incentives for further research and development of new agents and alternative solutions.
However, it is vital that we all pull in the same direction. I call on manufacturers, medical professionals, consumer organisations and farmers to leave behind their prejudices and finally work together. We need to act at the same time and take measures that will encourage the restrained and targeted use of antibiotics."@en1
