"In the light of developments in the Arabian Peninsula, I am concerned about the situation in the countries faced with a series of massive anti-government protests. Thousands of people have lost their lives in riots, and even more have been injured. At present, the situation leaves no doubt as to the brutal nature of the conflict, as is illustrated by an incident which took place a few days ago, in which men paid by the President of Yemen, Ali Abdullah Saleh, used stones and bottles to attack a rally celebrating the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Yemeni journalist, Tawakkul Karman, leaving 40 women injured.
The state of emergency declared in both countries is interfering with the functioning of these states at all levels. Human rights are being violated. Therefore, it is imperative that a solution to the conflict between the authorities and the opposition is reached. Peace must be established and a settlement between the parties needs to be agreed. The government’s attacks against the civilian population must be brought to an end. I call on the Yemeni and Bahraini authorities to resolve the conflict peacefully and to respect the rights and freedoms of its citizens. Al-Qaeda’s activities in these territories are also of concern, such as the attack on Yemen’s defence minister, the commander of a military offensive against al-Qaeda. The fight to oppose terrorism and bring security to this part of the world should be conducted with full respect for the principles of human rights. We should call for an end to arbitrary beatings and arrests. The European Union can play a significant role here by stressing the need for effective implementation of a variety of political initiatives aimed at supporting pro-democratic reform in Arab countries."@en1
