"Mr President, as a Greek, may I thank you for the excellent and hard work you have done for Greece and, as a Greek, may I say here that I accept your criticism of my country. However, I also wish to speak as an MEP. Prime Minister, we in the South started off as PIGS and now we have become guinea pigs. We accept that, if it means that we are to be the guinea pigs that demonstrate how this economic governance will ultimately work, but I would like to pass on to you verbatim something said to me by a Greek fisherman. ‘Madam,’ he said, ‘they are all sadists in the European Parliament. Every day we suffer a Chinese water torture, every day the Greek people hear that today, tomorrow, next week, Europe will tell us what is to become of us. We are a very insecure nation’. My question, Prime Minister, is this: is there a timetable for economic governance? If Greece is to crash, let it at least crash for the sake of cohesion and a truly united Europe."@en1
