"Global demand for agricultural products is expected to increase by approximately 70% by 2050, while the world’s population is also expected to reach 9 billion by then. As food insecurity is exacerbated by a host of factors, but by climate change in particular, I think that the European Union needs, as a matter of urgency, to take steps to restore food stocks which have reached record lows in recent years, thereby contributing implicitly to speculation over the prices of agricultural products on the market. As a champion of women’s rights, I firmly believe that women, as smallholder farmers, play a key role in ensuring food and nutrition security for both themselves and their children. In this context, I think that the European Union must adopt a strategy to foster and safeguard women’s livelihoods and to enable them to improve their knowledge about having sufficient nutrition. Last but not least, I should mention that the European Commission must focus on implementing a set of measures so that women, as smallholder farmers, benefit from agriculture training opportunities, education about nutrition, good health and working conditions, and food security measures."@en1
