"I have been consistently supportive of Turkey’s accession process while fully aware of serious concerns that have to be addressed. The Progress Report 2010 is a reasonably balanced document and I have voted in favour of it in spite of a number of reservations – not least over the Cyprus issue, where I much regret that the amendments calling for fulfilment of the EU Council’s promise to end the isolation of Northern Cyprus were voted down. Turkey has a pivotal role to play as a gateway between West and East and we should be sending positive and welcoming signals."@en1
