The issue of the sustainability of social security systems has become an unavoidable subject on Europe’s political agenda. Increased life expectancy, an ageing population, weak economic growth and increased unemployment are factors that have been contributed to an imbalance in social security systems. The current situation makes it necessary to take decisions that ensure the sustainability of social security regimes.
I am voting for this report because it advocates the need to build a system together that is sustainable, safe, and that provides adequate pensions at Member State level. It recognises that freedom of movement in Europe is not confined to first-pillar provision, but that mobility is indispensable for an effective and efficient labour market. It advocates the creation of a European pensions platform involving representatives of EU institutions, social partners and relevant stakeholders, in order to exchange information about best practices and help to prepare policy initiatives, all in compliance with the principle of subsidiarity. It calls on the European Commission to consider setting up a special task force on pensions."@en1
