"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, the proposal initially set a long-term emissions limit of 135g CO
/km for light commercial vehicles, to be achieved by 2020. However, in the unanimous opinion of manufacturers, it was technically impossible to respect this limit.
If the report had been approved as it was, the level of CO
would have been reduced by 0.00014% at a global level, compared to an extremely high economic impact of more than EUR 45 billion for Europe alone, which would inevitably lead to an average price hike of around EUR 3 800 per vehicle.
Despite these problematic issues, an agreement was reached with the Council at first reading that sets the emissions limit to be achieved by 2020 at 147g CO
/km, subject to feasibility, which must be assessed by the Commission before January 2013. In any case, this decision is purely political and has absolutely nothing to do with real industrial or market conditions, or consumer interests.
We will be voting against the report, because we believe that the economic impact is excessive in relation to the insignificant reduction of CO
at a global level."@en1
