"The protection of children’s rights, enshrined in the Treaty of Lisbon, is one of the European Union’s objectives to which even greater attention will have to be paid following the entry into force of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. European Union policy must therefore guarantee and implement children’s right to the protection and care necessary for their welfare. I voted in favour of this resolution, because I feel that there is a need to enhance policy on protecting children’s rights. The number of children abandoned and institutionalised, which is very high in some Member States, is cause for concern. Furthermore, violations of children’s rights, violence against them, child trafficking, enticement into prostitution, illegal work and other unlawful activities, remain a major problem in the European Union. I agree that it is necessary to assess the functioning of national systems at European level, so that it is possible to clarify matters as regards the protection of children’s rights, and take measures, if necessary, that would ensure more effective protection of homeless children and give them opportunities to have a family and be safe."@en1
