"Madam President, in this debate, Parliament is once again following an all too familiar course. American NATO troops make a mess in Afghanistan and the European Union then has to step in as guardian angel and take the initiative on the issue.
What is then the standard reaction of many in this House: if the EU did just a little bit more, then everything would be fine again! President, this line of thinking gets one stage worse, if you read paragraph 63 of the report which recommends the involvement of Iran in helping to bring about a solution to the problems in Afghanistan. Madam President, I had to read this three times just to make sure I had not imagined it, but it really is there: ‘recommends the involvement of Iran’! I have rarely come across a proposal as strange as this. This is tantamount to using Beelzebub to exorcise the devil. I have therefore voted emphatically against this report."@en1
