"I welcome the adoption of this proposal and of new penalties. Trafficking in human beings is a serious crime and a severe violation of fundamental human rights. I hope that this new directive will succeed in filling the gaps in the previous judicial framework and that the Anti-Trafficking Coordinator role is established within a clear legislative framework.
Although the Treaty of Lisbon strengthened the European Parliament’s role in judicial and police cooperation in criminal matters, the Member States are the ones that can play a key role in combating this crime. If we want to achieve a strong preventive effect, the Member States must make it a criminal offence for anyone to knowingly use the services of victims of trafficking."@en1
