"The report with recommendations to the Commission on improving the economic governance and stability framework of the Union, in particular, in the euro area, that we have just voted on, is part of a wider debate, that has been going on for several months, on initiatives to combat the financial crisis. A need is clearly emerging for strong economic governance of the European Union, especially after what happened in Greece a few months ago.
Any day now, we will see the final report by the European task force on economic governance, set up by the President of the European Council, Mr Van Rompuy. Even now, however, we can state that there is an absolute need to identify rules for surveillance of economic policies, rules that are not mechanistic but realistic and sustainable, able to strengthen fiscal policy and improve European governance as a whole."@en1
