It is young people in particular who underestimate the potential risk of infection. This is a consequence of ignorance of the disease. They are too young to remember the information campaigns of the 1980s and sex education is not a mandatory component of the curriculum in schools. A Eurobarometer survey in 2005 showed that the majority of European citizens would be in favour of increased EU involvement in combating HIV/AIDS.
