"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, the European Union is taking steps to devise a new alternative to traditional vehicles: that of electric cars. I am grateful to the Spanish Presidency for this, that is, for having included this important matter in its political agenda. I am also grateful to Commissioner Tajani for the points he made.
Many Member States are investing in and pushing for this type of clean technology, but Europe clearly must rethink the infrastructure, the definition of safety standards, the recharging systems and interoperability. A great deal of progress has already been made in terms of reducing the CO
emissions of cars, and I hope that, with the aid of innovation, electric cars will soon become an affordable method of transport for the general public.
It is particularly important to support new technologies, when the challenge is to have a low-carbon economy. Any concessions must not, however, penalise the traditional car industry, which has done and continues to do a great deal to promote sustainable mobility."@en1
