"The extension of the competences of the European Aviation Security Agency will allow all of us to travel more safely in the future.
I can only support the publication of this report as a result of our having identified, during the five years since the establishment of the Aviation Security Agency, the areas in which regulations need to be modified or perhaps refined, or, on the contrary, where the agency’s scope needs to be expanded.
The rapporteur has sought and has provided answers to these questions. The fact that the Agency’s scope of competences will in the future extend to pilot licensing, air operations, third country aircraft, collective oversight, etc., means that the safety of air transport can only increase; for in these kinds of activities, central procedures can be much more effective than if different regulations were in force within each Member State.
It is no less important that the Agency be prepared to face the challenges of the future, in order to be able to guarantee aviation safety over the long term. We need also to meet the challenges of providing appropriate financing for this purpose. In my opinion, the report takes a significant step forward in this direction as well.
For all these reasons, I congratulate the rapporteur and propose that the report – which can only benefit each European citizen – be adopted as is."@en1
