".
I agree with the proposal for a Decision currently before us. I also feel that the increase in appropriations must be directed primarily towards improving safety in existing reactors. Unlike the rapporteur, however, I feel that this should not exclude financing projects aimed at securing or improving existing equipment. Such is the case of the Euratom loan under active development for the completion of a reactor designed and built in Romania by Canadian, French, Italian and US companies – Cernavoda 2.
I am therefore opposed to such restrictive measures aimed solely at decommissioning facilities. Like all European citizens, I am concerned about the safety of installations – especially following the socio-political changes in Eastern Europe after November 1989 – and about current decommissioning programmes. Support for this proposal for a Decision arises from these concerns and from the idea that economic and social cohesion in Europe must also contribute more actively towards revitalising the economies of many of the countries where these installations are located, to which energy safety and sufficiency will certainly contribute a great deal."@en1
