"Mr President, I wish to make a brief point of order on an extremely important directive concerning cells and tissue, discussed in a report by our colleague Mr Peter Liese, which a short while ago we voted for here, at first reading. We have been dismayed to hear that, in its meeting this week and at the proposal of the Commission, the Council all but ignored the proposals of the European Parliament. I would ask the Presidency to convey the following message to the Council: we need this directive and Parliament’s rights must be observed. Unless the Council adopts a more flexible position, we will very probably be drawn into a laborious conciliation procedure in April or May, which is extremely inconvenient. The Council must therefore respect Parliament’s positions on this directive and be more flexible towards its own position when it embarks on the second reading in September.
