About time!
We have known since December 1999, since the
disaster and its tragic economic, social and environmental consequences, that withdrawing single hull oil tankers was an inescapable and urgent priority.
Shortly before the
disaster, I requested the introduction of a timetable for scrapping all single hull oil tankers by 2010. At the time, I was told that was impossible. All of a sudden, though, it has become possible, in the wake of the
disaster…
If it is to be effective, however, this measure should not be confined to the European Union. Rather, the International Maritime Organisation should intervene to make it international law. The Member States most threatened by oil spills, especially France, should make every effort to achieve this from now on. They should not hesitate to exert unilateral pressure either, as France and Spain did so judiciously at Malaga."@en1
