"Mr President, I support this proposal for a directive protecting the rights of children in criminal proceedings. I recognise that this agreement came after nine trilogues and I commend the committee and those involved in the work.
Given that there are an estimated 1 086 000 children in the EU who have faced criminal justice proceedings, there is clearly a need for a harmonious safeguards to be put in place. It is essential to protect a child throughout the process, ensure a fair trial, and also – and perhaps more importantly – prevent children from reoffending and to foster their social integration in order to avoid further problems down the line. This is of paramount importance and very challenging.
Finally, I just want to say that I condemn again the Egyptian authorities for postponing the trial of Ibrahim Halawa; we passed a resolution here on this a few weeks ago asking the Egyptian authorities to release him. He was arrested over three years ago now, when he was still a minor."@en1
