"Madam President, no progress has been made in the Doha negotiations. The Commissioner communicated this fact quite clearly. Originally, 2010 was supposed to be the year of breakthrough, but now that has changed to this year, 2011. However, we are still not seeing any real success in getting the Doha Round going. Even a minimum package for the least developed countries seems an unrealistic prospect. The failure of Doha would harm international trade and promote protectionism. Therefore, everyone will have to make concessions to give this round a chance of success.
I asked a question almost two years ago during a similar debate, namely whether the WTO’s negotiating system had managed to keep adequate pace with globalisation. In my opinion, that question remains a relevant one. Of course, there is more to the WTO than just Doha, but the lack of results is putting the WTO’s credibility in jeopardy."@en1
