"Madam President, first of all, I would like to thank both our rapporteurs for this important report. We should make cultural relations with third countries an asset of our foreign policy. With the European Union’s increasing presence on the international stage, our actions should rely on the use of our instruments and the regional programmes. I fully support the idea to include cultural diplomacy in the toolbox of our diplomatic relations. We should develop a strategy for cultural diplomacy at European Union level. European culture is rich. Our action in third countries needs to be more visible, and our communication channels more open. We should enrich our contacts with stakeholders active in this field. I can already see many possible benefits of a developing closer cultural relations with candidate countries and countries in our neighbourhood. We are part of a common cultural framework, and in many cases we share a common history. It could help us to use this soft power in areas such as conflict prevention or as a catalyst for stability and reconciliation. We also need the systematic support of independent media. In the modern world I see them as essential in promoting cultural diversity as well as credible information. We have to be more attentive to truthful information about European values, and we should recognise damaging propaganda and false news."@sk2
