"Mr President, the narrative is that the EU can only be a genuine strategic actor if it embraces realpolitik and cynicism. It is a dangerous and false narrative and a false dilemma, whether in the context of the refugee crisis or relations with Turkey or with Russia, or security in northern and western Africa. Ultimately, the root causes of European insecurity lie in gross abuse of human rights and failing governance in our neighbourhood. We don’t need another endless debate about the trade-off between strategic interests and human rights. Indeed, instead, we need a more strategic approach to promoting human rights. The EU must seize the initiative and formulate a positive agenda, such as pushing a new global architecture to manage migration flows and ensure the rights of refugees. In the same way, the EU pushed for R2B arms control, climate change, transitional justice and other issues. After the US elections, the EU may be the last global actor able and willing to fight for universal principles."@sk2
