"It is paramount that banks are an efficient component of our economy and not an element of risk. Banks need to be well capitalised in order to support the real economy, reduce systemic risk and avoid the repeat of the enormous bailouts witnessed during the crisis. The ongoing work of the Basel Committee should promote a level playing field at the global level by mitigating – rather than exacerbating – the differences between jurisdictions and banking models and not unduly penalising the EU banking model. A risk-based approach to regulation is key, with the same rules being applied to the same risk. I therefore support Parliament’s resolution that underlines key issues that could help to achieve greater transparency and accountability in enhancing the legitimacy and ownership of the Basel Committee (BCBS)."@ro2
