"The role of a free press is fundamental in establishing transparency and accountability, especially in a critical situation like the one Turkey is facing now. However, the breach in the freedom of expression of journalists, editors and media workers has gravely deteriorated, even prior to the coup d’état attempt that took place on 15 July. Before the attempted coup, there were only a handful of independent media outlets remaining and numerous journalists imprisoned. Following the event, even the last ones closed down: altogether 102 media organs were shut down by decree on 27 July 2016. Furthermore, as of 14 September 2016 there were 101 journalists detained. I, together with the S&D Group in Parliament condemn the recent police raids and the detention of a number of journalists and media representatives in Turkey, underlining that these actions undermine the freedom of the media, which is a core principle of democracy, and one of the fundamental values of the European Union."@ro2
