"In order to step up the fight against corruption, organised crime and money-laundering, the report tries to ensure that rules that already exist are enforced, to close loopholes in existing legislative frameworks and to request a more holistic approach to organised crime and corruption. Although some issues in the report were controversial, such as the need for a specific instrument to tackle ‘mafia-style’ criminal organisations – an idea that the S&D Group sympathises with – all major political parties gave the green light to the report during the compromise phase. I support this report, as I believe that it is very important to have a serious strategy backed up by a plan of action in order to tackle the growing prevalence of organised crime and corruption in the EU. Although the focus today is on terrorist threats, the danger of organised crime and corruption should not be ignored."@ro2
