"Madam President, Victoire Ingabire, the leader of the opposition Unified Democratic Forces party, was arrested in 2010 and is being held in prison for allegedly posing a terrorist threat to the country. However, the sentence was based on unreliable evidence, while of course we would want her to be judged on the basis of a fair trial. Like Victoire Ingabire, other political activists and government opponents have gone missing or are currently in prison. Effectively, the Rwandan government, despite calling itself democratic, is severely limiting political pluralism and obstructing freedom of expression and association throughout the country. Therefore, it is fundamental to establish a true democratic process, even in the light of the economic agreement signed at the beginning of September. The protection and freedom of its citizens must be ensured by the Rwandese government. It is necessary to allow a European delegation to attend and give evidence when this process will be seriously started."@it2
