"On 17 November 2015, an earthquake that measured 6.1 on the Richter scale hit the Ionian Islands region, in particular Lefkada, northern parts of Ithaki and Kefalonia. Two people lost their lives, eight were wounded and 120 houses were damaged. The Greek authorities reported extensive damage to infrastructure networks, buildings and cultural sites, with some of the most important tourist beaches destroyed on Lefkada. This report contains a Decision of the European Parliament and of the Council to mobilize the European Solidarity Fund to provide assistance to Greece following the earthquake. The European Union Solidarity Fund aims to enable the Union to respond in a rapid, efficient and flexible manner to emergency situations in order to show solidarity with the population of regions struck by natural disasters. BUDG recommends a swift approval of the Commission proposal to mobilize EUR 1651 834. The aid will help restore infrastructure, reimburse the cost of emergency measures and cover some of the clean-up operations. I support this report, as I believe that Greece is eligible to receive the European Solidarity Fund."@ro2
