"This report is key to the future development and prosperity of our economy and I hereby support it. SMEs are essential for the economy of EU regions, in terms of employment and competitiveness. ESI funds – through their Thematic Objectives (TO) – contribute to enhancing the competitiveness of the SMEs. For the 2014-2020 financing period more than EUR 63 bn have been allocated to the TO 3 ‘Enhancing the competitiveness of SMEs’ which – together with the national co-financing – will amount to EUR 94 bn. For the 2014-2020 programming period support is expected to be given to more than 800 000 SMEs; 396 500 micro, small and medium sized enterprises will receive ESF funding.
It is important to focus on promoting entrepreneurship, developing and implementing new business models and supporting growth in national and international markets. Nonetheless, the need for simplification of administrative procedures and a better access to financing for SMEs remains. Furthermore, it stresses the role of local governments which – directly or indirectly – are involved in programme monitoring committees. However, many of the local authorities are still lacking the administrative capacity to participate in the OPs. Therefore, technical assistance and their early involvement in the discussions regarding the OPs are crucial."@ro2
