"Tunisia has been successful in its transition towards democracy, respect for human rights and the rule of law and the country stands by itself as an example to be followed, in a region of the world overwhelmed by conflict. However, Tunisia`s economy has been very affected by the terrorist attacks of 2015 and in recent months there has been a rise in unemployment, which has triggered a large number of protests against the government. In 2014, an initial EUR 300 million programme was approved for Tunisia in order to strengthen the social safety net, improve the financial sector and the regulatory framework for trade and investment. Nevertheless, in light of the terrorist attacks of 2015, I support an additional programme of EUR 500 million, in the form of Micro Finance Assistance (MFA), in order to consolidate Tunisia`s democracy, address the issue of unemployment and create an attractive environment for investors."@ro2
