"Mr President, to complete the single market is the highway to jobs and growth. Let us have the courage to be disruptive and to stand up for an open, free and global internet. We liberate the forces that exist and boost trust by removing the digital barriers and borders. Consumers should not pay twice for the same service, depending on where they live in Europe, and our SMEs should not abide by 28 sets of rules. To create scale, they need one digital market.
I support this report as it addresses national exceptions and protectionism. Europe will become competitive through simple, modern and clear rules, not through shutting out others. Our problem is fragmentation, not innovation. We should not slow down the shared economy but ensure that transparency and a free flow of data is as important as the other four freedoms. The same rule should apply online and offline. Let me conclude by saying that swiftly reaching an agreement on safe harbour is crucial in order to avoid a legal vacuum. Time is running out."@sv2
