"I voted in favour of this report. The fact is that 39% of EU GDP (some EUR 4.7 trillion annually) and approximately 26% of all employment (56 million jobs) is generated in the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)-intensive sectors. The Commission’s proposed action plan, which is backed by the report, includes new enforcement tools and a ‘follow-the-money’ approach to deprive commercial-scale infringers of revenue flows. Awareness raising is needed, but the first tasks concern the integrity of supply chains, the reduction of profits in the online environment, assisting SMEs, chargeback systems, better cooperation between national authorities, and screening public procurement for IPR-infringing products. SMEs, especially, need particular support in fighting against counterfeiting. Bearing in mind the EU digital strategy, the Union’s copyright legislation also needs to be updated. I hope the Commission will come up with adequate new legislation, at the latest by next summer, accompanied by other necessary measures to turn digital strategy into digital action."@et1
