"Mr President, while we must not politically exploit Nadiya Savchenko’s story, and though her case is extremely grave as it appears that there are serious human rights violations, Parliament must not use it as an excuse to attack and condemn Russia for other reasons. On the contrary, it is a chance to reaffirm and promote a strong belief in the principle of fair trials and human and dignified conditions of detention. This does not seem to be guaranteed in this case. Savchenko is protesting with passive resistance from prison. In her most recent letter, dated 27 April 2015, she says ‘please do not write letters asking me to live and eat. Hunger is the only way I have to fight the lawlessness of the Russian authorities. So do not ask me to lay it down’. So let us defend the principle of fair trial and the rule of law."@it2
