"I voted in favour of the Committee on Fisheriesʼ report on the Commission proposal for a regulation establishing a multiannual plan for the stocks of cod, herring and sprat in the Baltic Sea and the fisheries exploiting those stocks (2014/0285 (COD)).
I am relieved as the report showed its understanding of regional particularities. The Baltic Sea, and especially the Gulf of Riga, has a very particular ecosystem. This was recognised from the start in the provisions which guaranteed within the framework of the Treaty of Accession implementation of specific measures to safeguard resources in the Gulf of Riga – a sensitive eco-region of the Baltic Sea. The Commissionʼs original proposal to open up the Gulf to all fishing fleets would have seriously damaged and possibly even destroyed the fragile ecosystem with a consequent direct threat to the existing cod, herring and sprat stock."@et1
