"I voted in favour of this resolution.
The situation in Venezuela is taking dramatic turns. President Maduro is systematically trying to clamp down any democratic opposition. Further, he has authorized using firearms against demonstrators protesting against the government politics. Up to 40 protesters have been killed as consequence of extreme police brutality, more than 1700 are awaiting trial, 69 are imprisoned.
Venezuelan authorities must immediately release Antonio Ledezma who was arbitrarily detained on 19.02.2015, Leopoldo López who has been detained in a military prison for more than a year and suffered physical, psychological torture and solitary confinement, Daniel Ceballos, all peaceful protesters, students and opposition leaders arbitrarily detained for exercising their right to freedom of expression and their fundamental rights, in line with the demands made by several UN bodies and international organisations. Further Venezuelan authorities should withdraw the unfounded accusations against them.
Antonio Ledezma, Leopoldo López, Daniel Ceballos and all other political prisoners must be ensured any medical attention they may require, as well as immediate, private and regular access to their families and to lawyers of their choice.
I urge the EEAS, and the EP to meet the Venezuelan opposition politicians and activists and discuss the grave situation and provide them with needed support."@et1
