"Mr President, the situation in Sudan still needs our urgent attention. There are constant reports of the killing and torture of people, harassment of political activists and human rights defenders, as well as cases of Sudanese government soldiers using sexual violence, including gang rape of teenage girls, as a weapon of war against the rebels. The Sudanese authorities must stop their harassment and must comply with the relevant international norms and standards, in particular the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders of 1998, and all regional and international human rights instruments also ratified by Sudan.
The recent case of the arrest of Dr Amin Mekki Medani is another example of what is wrong in Sudan. He must be released immediately. The ICC Prosecutor already presented, years ago, evidence showing that Sudanese President al-Bashir committed crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, but al-Bashir is still president, he is still free and crimes continue. The UN and ICC must finally implement what has been decided, to stop the violations of human rights in Sudan and harassment against human rights defenders."@et1
