"Jailing government's political opponents and Kafka-like trials that we see in Venezuela, shows that Venezuelan government openly carries out tactics of an authoritarian regime. The case of Leopoldo Lopez is merely one instance of an unfair, illegal and politically motivated trial. The national court has not been impartial in his case. All but one of Mr. López’s 65 defense witnesses was rejected whilst 108 of the government’s witnesses were admitted. So far, no evidence has been presented against the opposition leader. It is important that the European Parliament to speak loudly in this case - condemn political persecution and the imprisonment of democratic opposition in Venezuela and call for their release. I had a chance to meet Leopoldo personally some time ago, so this is also my personal call. I support his views and encourage him in his political fight for democratic Venezuela."@sk2
