"Mr President, today in Venezuela many civic and political opposition leaders are in prison. Leopoldo López is just the most well-known, but almost 100 young activists are in prison and more than 2 000 are under investigation, all for exercising their right to protest against a government which has led the country to the brink of disaster. President Maduro and his government must understand that, in a democracy, we compete fairly with our opponents. We do not jail them, with a view to ending their political careers and even lives. The UN Human Rights Commissioner called for the release of these prisoners, and so did the Committee against Torture and the Organisation of American States. Now the European Parliament is calling for their release. We cannot all be considered part of a conspiracy against Venezuela. Quite the opposite, we want a democratic path for the Venezuelan people; we want their safety and prosperity."@ro2
